Dear colleagues!

 We are glad to invite you to participate in the XIII International Shnittke Competition of Young Composers.

The Competition will be held in the Saratov State Sobinov Conservatory  on the 24–26 November 2020.

The organizers are the theory of music and composition department of the Saratov Conservatory and the Guild of young musicians of the Russian Musical Union ("MolOt International Group").

Composers not older than 30 years by the day of the beginning of the Competition are entitled to participate.

The Competition has two categories: «Composition for a chamber ensemble» and «Composition for a young organ player». Every participant can take part on one or two categories.

For the category «Composition for a chamber ensemble», one work must be presented written for two or more instruments from the listed below – organ, flute, violin, double bass, piano, voice (soprano). An electronic phonogram can be used as one of the parties. The maximum duration of a composition is 15 minutes. A composition must use a theme by A.G. Shnittke (see Appendix 1 in the statute of the Competition).

For the category «Composition for a young organ player», one work for an organ solo must be presented. The maximum duration of a composition is 5 minutes.

The Competition is held in two rounds: the first round is distance (selection). It is held in the period of the 1 –15 October 2020 and includes studying, evaluation and selection of the sent-in compositions. The second round is in-person and consists of public hearings on the 24–26 November 2020.

The applications will be admitted till the 30 September 2020 via e-mail konkurs‑schnittke@mail.ru.

STATUTE
of the XIII International Shnittke Competition of Young Composers
24–26 November 2020, Saratov

1. General conditions


1.1. The XIII International Shnittke Competition of Young Composers (hereinafter – the Competition) is established by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
1.2. The Competition is organized by the Saratov L.V. Sobinov State Conservatory.
1.3. A co-organizer of the Competition is the Guild of young musicians of the Russian Musical Union ("MolOt International Group").
1.4. The Competition is established in 1996 and held biyearly.


2. Tasks and objectives


2.1. Supporting of composing.
2.2. Integration of educational institutions that realise educational programs in the sphere of arts of different levels in a united educational and cultural system of the Russian Federation.
2.3. Development of the career guidance for the engagement of talented prospective students (including under the contract of employer-sponsored education).
2.4. Creation of conditions for the preservation and development of the cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
2.5. Discovery and support of young talents.
2.6. Artistical, moral and patriotic education of the youth
2.7. Demonstration of the best achievements of the musical education.
2.8. Spreading of the experience pf the leading masters in the sphere of musical art.
2.9. Professional development of teachers in the sphere of arts and culture.


3. Conditions of participation


3.1. Composers not older than 30 years by the day of the beginning of the Competition are entitled to participate/
3.2. The Competition has two categories: «Composition for a chamber ensemble» and «Composition for a young organ player».
3.3. Every participant may take part in one or two categories.
3.4. For the category «Composition for a chamber ensemble»:
3.4.1. Participants present a composition for two or more instruments from the listed below – organ, flute, violin, double bass, piano, voice (soprano). An electronic phonogram can be used as one of the parties.
3.2.4. The maximum duration of a composition is 15 minutes.
3.4.3. A composition must use a theme by A.G. Shnittke (see Appendix 1).
3.4.5. A cyclus is to be presented fully if it fits the duration limit. Single parts of a cyclic works are not allowed into the Competition.
3.5. For the category «Composition for a young organ player»:
3.5.1 Partisipants present a composition for solo organ.
3.5.2. The maximum duration of a composition is 5 minutes. The difficulty level must suit pupils of lower and higher clases of the children music school. A cyclus is to be presented fully if it fits in the duration limit. Single parts of a cyclic works are not allowed into the Competition.


4. Procedure of the Competition


4.1. The Competition is held in two rounds: the first round is distance (selection). It is held in the period of the 1 –15 October 2020 and includes studying, evaluation and selection of the sent-in compositions. The second round is in-person and consists of public hearings on the 24–26 November 2020.
4.2. The Competition is anonymous. To participate in two categories a composer must use different passwords-identifiers.
4.3. Not later than 17 October 2020 every participant who will come into the in-person round will receive an official notification by the e-mail with the date of arriving at the Competition. The list of participants for the second round of the Competition (in form of password-identifiers) will be published on the site of Saratov State Conservatory not later than the 18 October 2020.
4.4. The public hearings will be held 24 and 25 November 2020 in the Saratov Sobinov State Conservatory.
4.5. Composition for the category «Composition for a chamber ensemble» will be performed by the ensemble «Theatre of the New Music» (artistic director V Orlov).
4.6. Compositions for the category «Composition for a young organ player» will be performed by students and teachers of the Saratov conservatory.
4.7. The gala-concert of the Competition laureates will be held on the 26 November 2020 in the Great Hall of Saratov Sobinov State Conservatory.
4.8 In the conduct of the Competition master classes of the jury members, a practical seminar in composing, and academic readings «From Alfred Shnittke to nowadays» will be held.
4.9. The documents needed for the participation on the Competition are listed below:
- an application form in doc or docs format (see Appendix 2);
- full scores and parties of compositions in pdf format, typed and signed with an invented for the Competition password-identifier of a participant (musical scores with names or other personal information are not allowed to participate);
- audio or video record of compositions applied, made especially for the Competition (the presentation of a good quality demonstration audio record is allowed).
- a colored scan of a participant’s pass in jpeg or pfd format (with photo, signature and registration pages)
- a short biography in free form, doc or docx format;
- a copy of personal insurance policy number, taxpayer identification number
- a number of a bank settlement account.
All documents must be sent in one mail vie e-mail konkurs-schnittke@mail.ru till 30 September 2020 (inclusive).
An application is approved only after a confirmation by the Organizing Committee.
4.10. The Organizing Committee has right to decline an application if it doesn’t follow the form and doesn’t include all the listed documents, as well as in the case of late payment of the entry fee.
4.11. The entry fee is non-refundable and amounts to 1000 rubles in each category. The entry fee must be placd to the account of the Saratov Sobinov State Conservatory after the confirmation of an application by the Organizing Committee till the 3 October 2020 (inclusive). The scan of payment is sent in a separate mail.

5. Prizes


5.1. After the public hearing, the jury assigns diplomas and titles of laureates and diploma winners between finalists.
5.2. Publication of winner’s compositions is intended.
5.3. Participants do not get any fee for their performance in the Competition or the further use of the recordings and broadcastings of these performances.
5.4. The Organizing Committee has exclusive rights for making any audio and video records of the Competition hearings and the gala-concert.

 

6. The Jury of the Competition


6.1. The Jury of the Competition is formed out of well-regarded Russian and foreign composers.
6.2. The Jury is entitled to assign not all places, share places between participants, establish additional prizes.
6.3. The jury’s decision is final and cannot be revised.
